That isn't even the worst of it. Not only did I not see anything special in FF VI, but I thought that FF XII was the best JRPG ever made. I'm, like, the anti JRPG gamer. Except I really like JRPGs :P

That's possible, but I have played FF IV. That one I really like. That one is pretty similar in a lot of ways. Rebellion vs. Empire, frequent party changes for variety, similar combat mechanics. Good soundtrack.

I would also argue that Basch is the main character of 12. I just didn't bring that up because for the most part people don't seem to have made it to the part of the game where the "real" story actually kicks in because that isn't until like 20 hours in (which is a totally fair complaint against the game by the way).

Jesus Christ. Okay. FF VI is an undisputed classic. Practically flawless. A mechanical and literary gem. A high point not just in the Final Fantasy franchise but in video games period.

Oh, so sort of like FF XII then? That's another one with a plot where the beginning characters get faded into unimportance in favor of the actual plot and politics later on.

You know, I was trying to remember what the last thing I did in that game was and I actually have no idea. I know I did the Opera House, I know I did "Terra turn into a Super Saian and flies to some crappy town to take a nap", and I know I did "Sneak into the imperial fort with all those annoying encounters". I

Geez, is it actually 100 hours? That seems WAAAAY too long considering how simplistic the combat and character progression stuff is. Normally the only way you get 100 hours into a game like this is with something like Disgaea or Final Fantasy Tactics where there's such depth to the mechanics that the player can be

It's interesting that you exclude FF XII from your dismissal of all post FF VI Final Fantasy narratives. That's my favorite in the franchise. It's many things, but by no measure is it "pandering to emo teenagers" or "wish-fulfillment writing". The criticisms most commonly leveled at it are that it went too far in

But I wasn't having fun. If I run out of fun at 10 hours and the game expects me to play for 40 or some such number, that's a problem right there.

Oh sure, everyone has nostalgic favorites. I think everyone really values his/her first JRPG. The first time you go on a journey across the entire world and discover true love save everything and whatever it's pretty mind blowing. I wouldn't dream of arguing that people who love the game should stop loving it.

I don't understand what makes Final Fantasy VI such a classic. I tried it on the Virtual Console and nothing there struck me as significantly unlike other Final Fantasy games from the pre VII era. It wasn't awful mind, it just seemed very... normal.

Well this is a crossover game between Persona and Etrian Odyssey. The question is, are there other games in November catering to the very specific crowd that's into those Atlus JRPGs? Frankly, I'm not sure that inevitable million sellers like the Halo remakes, the Call of Duty sequel, or the new Far Cry are really

Playing with another person actually works pretty well. Everyone is just staring at the puzzle together until somebody says "Wait, I got it. Pull that blue block out two and... okay wait no, that's not it"

Secretly, that's the best part about Dota's toxic community. Any time I'm playing too much I run into some complete asshole and remember "oh right, Dota is a place where people don't treat each other decent. Why on EARTH would I spend time here?"

You know what this trailer made me realize? I'm not into Call of Duty. At all. Shooters weird me out. But all the criticism about the three games being basically the same? I don't think that's a problem. I find games that I like, play a TON of them, and then look forward to the sequel that's going to be pretty

The answer is: Because it's hard. It takes exponentially more effort to design a dungeon with multiple moving pieces and puzzles that's good, has a reasonable difficulty curve, doesn't allow the player to get stuck in impossible to solve situations, and is reasonably paced than it is to have the art team make a

When anime changes, the JRPGs will change with it. That's where the JRPG storytelling trends are set.

Dragon Quest V

No way. The video game landscape is evolving and Nintendo is digging in their heels rejecting it? I just can't imagine them doing that.

I think that there should be comment when something like this happens. Ubisoft said a dumb thing and are doing a dumb thing. Media points it out, Ubisoft probably changes course, all's well in the world.
