I was reading an analysis of the ruling last night. It seems the judge found that the officer hadn’t acted “recklessly” because the officer had pointed his firearm at the intended target and pulled the trigger. By IL legal standards, that shows intent, and elevates the crime from reckless to intentional.

There was no jury. The cop’s attorneys asked for a bench trial, which means the judge decides the verdict without a jury.

The time it took for him to draw his weapon could have been equally spent stepping on the accelerator. He chose to shoot instead.

Exactly! It’s such bullshit that he’s still trying to claim that he was in danger, even when the judge himself agreed that he definitely was not.
