Wow, it never occurred to me this was up for debate - it certainly wasn't in my AP English class.
Hence the wide blades with all-around curvature - it goes in and makes a very wide hole, then you pull it out sideways (not straight into your face.) Plus you basically have an ice-pick on the end so....you know...double the deadliness and weapon endurance.
