NV 266 to CA 168, we generally drive this yearly from Las Vegas to Tahoe. The road is generally pretty deserted, but can get some slower tourist traffic. US395 from Lone Pine, CA to Topaz Lake NV is also beautiful, but it is worth it to divert over to Highway 89 to Alpine Village.

My uncle, an avid boater, always recommended leaving the truck in drive if you have an auto trans.
