No one was feeding their family through hunting at this point. Even in Nebraska, hunting was a tiny part of their nutrition. A few deer per year might be a nice supplement, but they weren’t surviving through hunting. They were farmers and tradespeople.

I think the problem with Anne with an E was the tone. It loses the humor and whimsy and adds totally unnecessary trauma. I was fine with including flashbacks of the abuse because that is hinted at in the book, but adding the part where Anne runs away, is almost sex-trafficked, and joins up with a peddler when she is

The family didn’t move from Northern Europe, they moved from Wisconsin where they had family and a comfortable home because Pa had a pioneer fantasy and Ma was completely submissive to him. I’m not blaming them personally for all of American history, but rereading it as an adult you do see some of the glossing over

I just hope part of the plot revolves around Martha back in Russia.

I wonder if Netflix could do a new adaptation and conceptualize it a little more....or maybe that would infuriate people who mostly remember the old tv show and the glossy nostalgic image?

Yeah, the part where Laura watches the Indian tribe being driven off their land and fixates on the Indian baby with black “button eyes” and wants to kidnap it really freaked me out when I reread it. Also, in Little House, the family is illegally settling on Indian land and gets evicted by the army. WTF?? As a kid,

I’m not a fan of this barbie, but can a person or corporation own the right to the likeness of a deceased historical figure of international significance? That has troubling implications for free speech and art.

CA - I think they pay like 15/day. Even 50/day wouldn’t make a difference though. Cost of living is high here.

Tangentially, can anyone give me advise on jury duty? I’m summoned at the end of the month to criminals court. I’m self employed and terrified of ending up on a jury that takes longer than a week. If I don’t work, I don’t get paid. I won’t be able to pay any of my bills. I know someone who was on a 5 month jury,

She definetely confirms my opinion that Indian people are among the most beautiful in the world.

Great news! I enjoyed his memoir a lot. I wouldn’t say his mom is “sweet” so much as “fierce” or “badass.” She had an amazing amount of courage and ability to give no fucks about being repeatedly arrested for loving Trevor’s dad.

Especially when we are talking about teenaged school shootings, that argument is absurd. What suburban 14-19 year old has the cash and the connections to go out and buy an illegal gun? How would they even know where to go? That takes a lot of advance planning, connections, savvy, access to transportation, and money.

Maybe he is just a really bad poet? If this many years of exegesis hasn’t yielded the answer, maybe he couldn’t write a legible clue bearing poem.

Okay, I’ll take your word for it.

If you are a prince of Monaco who can pay full tuition and hire PhD ghost writers for applications and coursework and the only US university that will take you is Western Carolina University, something is seriously wrong. Also “attended business school in France” but got his BA in hicksville USA unknown university?

Wait, what about the lemons, though? Those are clearly lemons, not limes. Is it manly to drink lemons in your gin?

For a second I thought you meant she was literally a blind ice dancer and that made me so happy. There are some really incredible blind ballroom dancers who get around the floor just fine. No reason blind people can’t do partner dance in particular. But no....

Ice dancing is weird as an Olympic sport because it is more of an art than a sport. It kind of belongs to its own category. Personally, I prefer dance over sports, which is why ice dancing is my favorite. Pairs and singles dancing seems like a lot of fast backwards skating leading up to huge jumps...impressive, but

I thought they were great but I wonder if dancing as siblings isn’t a big disadvantage? You can’t exactly do a love song and a lot of ice dancing seems to be about EMOTION (in capital letters). I appreciated their skating on a technical level, but it didn’t awe me like the French couple, who were my favorites.
