Super Mario Land 3 was centred around Wario I believe. I've never played it myself, but I've seen it, and you control Wario, his trademark being a shoulder-check attack instead of jumping.

Somehow, I grew to love the twitchy swinging with Super Metroid's grapple beam. I got pretty good at it too, and really set in me an enjoyment for swinging mechanics. It was one thing that I felt Metroid Prime series did worse.
