His first and honest answer was that it was very possible he saw the email, but couldn’t recall specifically that he did. His second and third strange “spin” on the answer emphasized that he has no specific recollection. He should have just stuck to his original answer, for better or worse.

His answers don’t really contradict each other. He never said “yes, I remember the email.” He never said “no, I’m certain I never read the email” because that would have been a lie. He sounds uncertain whether he may or may not have read the email.
