I get what your saying there, but along with what you mentioned, the shuttles were never going to leave low earth orbit whereas a capsule program could have left the door open for exploration. They shut the door on anything but LEO, then justified it with the ISS.

We never got away from the ocean splashdowns with the shuttle for the folks on the ground and you hardly need a carrier task force to do the job of recovery.

Considering how far SpaceX has come with this capsule, imagine how far NASA could have gotten if they had stuck with that design instead of wasting all that cash on the Shuttles?
