Eat a dick. The funny thing is as time goes on people have less time for fun and more of this thing adults call bills. One day you’ll grow up and have to pay bills yourself then you’ll realize time is money, bitch.
No, there just wasn’t a way for them to take advantage of a paid system before. If you want to put it on websites that will actually give your mod exposure, you couldn’t charge and had to ask for donations instead. But that’s no way to make money - you won’t make shit.
Of course, because making a mod and an entire game with script, music, actors, capture and marketing is exactly the same right? Dont be childish. You are just a cheap ♥♥♥ who dont want to pay for someone elses work.
Pretty much exactly what mod developers are saying. Even ARMA modders have attempted to go to this, such as the guys behind Six Updater (and even ACRE makes money as they sell an advanced version of that famous radio mod for the military grade version of Bohemia Interactives ARMA 3, VBS3. )
The era of paid Steam mods ended almost as quickly as it began. Some people are pleased. Others are even more upset…
Modders were upset because it was a poorly implemented system with an unfair revenue sharing scheme and a blind eye for the incestuous nature of mod features. That’s unfortunate, but those are issues that could have been looked at more closely and resolved.
Well, gamers, in general, are one of the more entitled groups of people...
Or, and this is crazy: try to get it right.
Proud, really? This whole things has just reminded me that the gaming community as a whole is one of the most selfish and vitriolic communities on the web. Ask them to pay for content and they resort to harassment and death threats.
But the modders are just riding the coat tails of the game publishers. You can debate the split or if mods should be paid at all, but it’s disingenuous to pretend that the modders are doing all the work. No game, no mods. That is indisputable.
I dunno though - without the platform and its publisher, those mods wouldn’t exist. Why can’t they be compensated as well? Or is it the percentage they’d get that was in issue?
Really? Your trust in a company that actually listens to their community and reversed a major change based on feedback has been ruined forever?
cool - this sends a nice clear message from gamers who just play things to gamers who are so passionate about their hobby they gain a level of professionalism at something related even at the expense of their health, well-being, free time and fiscal sanity.
People are really uppity that Gabe is just saying “capitalism works, we are not a charity.”
Forgive my ignorance here, but none of those ops looked particularly black. Seems like they were running around in broad daylight loudly and obviously blowing things up.
Okay another cross suggestion;
That guy has a good drive to his work, but if it’s SFM we’re talking about, it really don’t get much better than this guy:
It’s a single guy working with a limited budget. There is no kickstarter, so presumably he has another job to fund the development/pay his bills. The simple graphics basically allow him to explore this novel/niche concept without bankrupting him if it flops, which it very easily could.
