That whirring sound you hear is the sound of MLK turning over in his grave at the thought of Beck using him for an example here.
The demographics aren't that horrible. If they were, Freedom Works wouldn't feel compelled to pump $8 million into Texas to keep it red. And that was what they were going to spend before Tuesday. Hispanics in Texas significantly undervoted their margin of the electorate in 2012. It will take a huge voter registration…
I had that exact same thought while I was going to lunch. Conflicting rulings would force the Court to take it up quicker.
Oregon would be a good choice. The Ninth Circuit would be all over striking that down.
Yes. Most of the states that have enacted a constitutional ban on same sex marriage have also enacted a constitutional ban on recognizing the same sex marriages performed in other states.
Yeah, but it'd still be wise to choose a circuit that would be likely to overturn the state law.
Yes. But I can't imagine it's going to take long. Well, it won't take long to see the case originate. It might take a few years to work its way to the Supremes.
I don't know that it bolstered state's rights, at least not in the long-term. It's such a wonderfully broad ruling, that plaintiffs will be able to use it to attack state laws preventing same sex marriage. That's yet another thing that pissed Scalia off.
That would be the ideal situation, but people don't always have that choice. An employer might require you to move or risk losing your job. You may have family reasons to move to another state. There might be educational reasons for moving to a state that doesn't recognize same sex marriage.
It's not the state preventing the government from giving the benefit, it's that certain programs have marriage defined differently. The example I saw yesterday is that SSA survivor benefits are defined based on whether your state of residence considers you legally married. If you legally marry in one state, but then…
I'm amazed to discover there are people who don't like Garfunkel and Oates...
Yeah, this was never a question of if, this was always a question of when. I'm sure they'll try to get the bill to the floor long before the last day of the session, in order to make a filibuster physically impossible. Like you say, the true battle is next fall, not next week or next month. We need to not lose sight…
Great. Now I'm hearing Never Going To Give You Up in my head. It also reminded me of this.
I don't know why they wouldn't want that for a product testimonial.
I don't know why, but for some reason I don't believe you.
Yep. And as yesterday showed us, we've also got fights to win on reproductive rights and voting rights.
Don't forget Kirk Watson, who played a huge part in keeping the parliamentary fight going for almost 90 minutes to run out the clock after they gave her the last mark for the trumped up germane call.
You are absolutely correct. It's an unbefuckinglievable act of hypocrisy in light of the VRA decision.
It's good news. It's just good news that applies only to California and has no force anywhere else.
