It's worth noting that VTEC style systems are actually not that common at all. Most systems will simply change the cams phase angle in relation to crankshaft angle. VTEC actually uses a completely different cam lobe which can be sized according to the engine speed and efficiency.
I think this is one of the times where we can confidently say "the aftermarket will fix it". Bummer that they didn't do headlights as they were on the original concept, but no biggie IMO.
