I think “Willy” comes from a more Germanic origin, as a shortening of “Wilhelm”. “Willie” suggest the Anglicized version, “William”.  Same root, different branches.

Agreed! But that’s a direct competition between racers, not an arbitrarily-scored showpiece performance.  Racing is racing, and you have a (usually) clear winner.
