I don’t get it. What’s wrong with zombies?

Yeah, and that awful QTE at the end was just the worst. Only complaint I had with the game, really, aside from the way it handled women (there are no flawed, interesting women in the game, just perfect ones who can handle anything better than the men), grappling with zombies, and the stupid dream sequence.

Originality, using Dying Light as a way to explain the problem.

Sorta. I had about half a dozen similar discussions and saw a few dozen/nearly a hundred similar tweets all around the same time. The impression I had was that some well-known person in a particular circle of games criticism had said something, and a bunch of people were echoing it as if it was the word of god.

Nah, he’s big into altgames.

“The West” in games tends to refer to all non-Asian developers. Europe and North America, basically.

thousands of words detailing how a bunch of mechanics work really well together

But if it’s well-constructed, it isn’t bland. These two ideas are mutually incompatible.

You’re doing great. I like your posts in this comment thread a lot.

I mean, I even said, in the article, that the whole point of parkour was to give players even more ways to handle scenarios. Parkour isn’t there just to attract attention, it’s core to the game’s design. It supports and enhances creative play in a way that the same game minus the parkour couldn’t do.

The thing about Dying Light is that it’s nothing like previous experiences. The closest comparison is Far Cry, and even that’s stretching it significantly.

That metaphor doesn’t work where games are involved, unless you’re seriously suggesting choosing to ignore everyone else’s games and only play the games you make for yourself?

to be fair, the beta of BFHL was exactly like a reskinned BF4.

The point of the article is that you should never outright dismiss a game just because it doesn’t sound original. There are other questions to ask.

No, it’s vastly superior to Dead Island, which was awful for so many reasons.

Yes, this is the proper metaphor. Just because someone is trying a recipe that’s never been made before doesn’t mean it’s good. Better to talk to friends about what places they recommend instead of just going “well, never been here before, so it’s inherently better than places I’ve already been.” Imagine never eating

So wait until it goes on sale/you have a coupon.

Yeah, that's Night Dive, right? Been following their stuff.

I have indeed!

Will do.
