What in the hell are you driving? If you want to save money buy a $15k Fiesta 1 liter (I get 43-46 highway). A BEV will not save you the most money at this point, the barrier to entry is still too high.

They may drive a bland Toyota, but is it dirty? Dinged up? Billowing smoke? I really doubt it. It’s still an image, just a more conservative version. A overwhelming majority of people care to some extent.

I don’t think you can eliminate the flash factor of buying a car. Why would people want their EV’s to look distinctly like EV’s, their Ford GT to have a flying buttress or their Miata to have that iconic smile?

Did I ever say the Alfa is JUST an image car??? Have you seen both in person? I’ve seen the Miata at the Jalopnik launch on Woodward and I’ve been up to the Fiat dealer in Birmingham to see their 4C. They’re very different cars for very different audiences.

The Miata is great, it’s phenomenal at what it does, it’s also 1/2 the price of the 4C. They don’t compete in the same air space. No one is cross shopping the Miata and 4C.

As an enthusiast with a Scirocco track car I understand where you’re coming from but if image was not part of it everyone would be driving an old E30 or Mk2 GTI. Denying the conspicuous consumption angle of a new car is simply being purposefully dense.
