I'm sure this policy changes based on the line you ride - maybe even boat to boat - but I have had luck skipping bringing it in my luggage and then purchasing in the ports. I find that they are much more lax with examining "souvenirs" than luggage and it is easy to find cheap booze in the ports.

I agree completely! I've been using (and abusing) these notebooks for years - they are all still in good condition. I have had so many problems with mead products durability.
