I think that's a matter of timing. If he had done something original right now, I think it would have been lost in the buckets of water. If he did this afew months from now, then yes, everyone would have just looked at it and gone "Didn't we do this already?"

This brought more attention to another big issue, then him dumping ice water on his head would have ever had done for ALS. The whole ice bucket challenge is starting to lose its meaning. It this can help bring other issues to light, then good.
