I can't speak for other countries, but the Canadian military does far more than just stand guard with guns. They also serve humanitarian and disaster relief missions both here in Canada and abroad. The most recent example being the storm that hit the Philippines.

Yes, but only the lazy or masochistic pay full price for that kind of thing without shopping around. I can walk into any cell provider here and immediately get a free or cheap high end phone. It's not some limited time sale, it's available to anyone at anytime, as long as you adhere to their requirements.
