The locked bootloader issue is a good point and is something I've mentioned to friends. I'm an "enthusiast" myself and have an unlocked bootloader/custom recovery/etc. on my tablet, which rarely leaves my house, but my phone is locked.

This. RDP is a way better performer especially in cases where there is little happening on screen. Although 10 years ago when I was still in college, my friend (using RDP) was streaming The Daily Show on campus from home perfectly lag free with sound.

There are other FDE systems that work on the Mac like PGP, CheckPoint, and WinMagic but they all face compatibility issues whenever new hardware or software is released.

This is good to know. I didn't realize that at the time. I prefer set it and forget it though. It's convenient to be able to say "leave the PC on and just turn off the monitor" and I'll take a look tonight instead of "let me know when you're not using the computer."
