It is important to note that XCode only runs on Mac OS X, and it's also the only supported way to make iOS apps. Without a Mac you're pretty much SOL. There is an option to use C# via Xamarin, but to create a complete app (code + UI) you need to pay $25/month, and even then you don't get to use visual studio (that'll

So, a closed-source pre-alpha windows-only program?

The main problem with relation to marriage is it's actually a dual-secretary problem. A person applying to a job will most likely accept an offer, whereas a person looking for marriage may not be at the same point (36.8%), so will reject you.

I might get some flak for this, but...

I wonder why Randall went with a wrench instead of a rubber hose

RDP performs about a million times better than VNC :P It comes with downsides, though, namely that the host computer will lock out local users when someone remotes in on desktop versions of Windows (not the case for Windows servers).

This actually looks pretty cool. Thanks for the rec.

Performance is really crappy would be the main difference, which is quite noticeable over the Internet. You can use NX (FreeNX or NoMachine's official proprietary server) to do get significantly improved performance. It also uses SSH for security, so you don't have to poke any new holes. And it too can be used just to

I'd note that system encryption with TrueCrypt can only be done on Windows. If you want to do system encryption on Mac OS X, FileVault is the only option I know of (and system encryption is only available Lion and later IIRC). On Linux, the standard method is dm_crypt + LUKs. Ubuntu even has a checkbox for full disk

The account only needs to be the same for unattended access. for attended support access, the other user can generate a one-time code to grant you permission.

MS Remote Desktop is probably one of my favorites. Do note that I would never recommend using Remote Desktop naked over the Internet. However, combined with either RD Gateway, a VPN, or SSH it's a great remote access program. The reason being that by itself, remote desktop requires your PC login credentials and is

Probably the best no-setup free (including commercial use) remote access program. It's not quite as good as TeamViewer overall, but if you need free in a commercial environment for some reason, I can't think of any no-setup ones that are better.

I use VNC for LAN remote access, but it's horribly painful for remote access over the Internet IMO.

IMO, Teamviewer was always better than LogMeIn. It was smoother, more integrated, and supports Linux. LogMeIn only had two benefits over it: It had browser-based remote access for a cheaper price (TeamViewer requires you pay $1500/yr to get that) and it could be used for free in a commercial environment.

Indeed. Here's another, specifically for the winner of this Hive Five:

I actually have. I'm a big fan of chaos communication Congress. That said I don't see the NSA employing general TSA and border patrol officers to do their dirty work. Appelbaum talks about mail interception and breaking in, which is more believable. I doubt the NSA wants more leaks. Implanting bugged HDD firmware or
