Hurts even more that it’s my beloved city. I teach in Malvern right now and for the last ten years. Used to teach around Galloway for a similar length of time, and I will admit I’ve seen race-hatred go in all kinds of directions.  I’m sorry it was ever aimed at you.

Wow. That is some heartbreaking lived experience. This is the thing that, I think, so many people don’t get about the asymmetrical impact of racism. Some of us live in such sheltered lives that we can get fooled into thinking that it’s mostly over.

Thanks for this thoughtful reply.  I think that the majority of my students would agree with you that mispronunciation of a name is not a microaggression.  Again, I think it’s a thing that hurts different people very differently depending on their lived experience.  Again, though, I really appreciated your response.
