Love me a little Isetta.

Your going to have to program safty measures for quick thinking maneuvers, chases, dog/animal avoidance, people on bikes, rain/snow surfaces...there are many many variables. Even after they are done I won't trust it.

With so many weird situations on the roads, the driverless car is going to have to hand off to a human who may already be involved in something else is not looking at the road and is not ready to take over. Does the manufacturer avoid liability if it simply switches to “manual mode” seconds before a crash?

Here’s my very articulate response: WELL, DUHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

If we can't figure out how to drive after more then 100 years, what chance do we have of successful self driving cars? They are, after all created by us.

Yeah your local mechanic isn’t going fix or calibrate you LIDAR or inertial nav system...

Exactly .... These people have never seen how weather can effect LIDAR, RADAR, ultrasound etc... Heavy rain can seriously fuck with GPS not mention line of sight and multipathing issues in cities.

Problem: Technology exponentially increases distracted driving, resulting in more collisions.

For what it’s worth, in my reasonably well-informed opinion (Ph.D. in computer science, experience in AI and robotics), your prediction is very plausible.

You forget that the necessary sensors do not exist. There is not only the question of ‘programming’ = requires the most sophisticated AI systems the world has ever seen, by a long shot (so no way that is ready for use in a long time). We also lack the hardware to be anything near ready for autonomous driving.

Will they make certain roads off limits to cars helmed by humans? If i take my classic car on autonomous roads are the autonomous poloce going to catch me? How much carnage can i sow? I see autonomous vehicles working in select locations that were designed for them. Otherwise, it’s a utopian dream. We can’t even keep

My lay opinion is that it will be 25-50 years before there is fully autonomous driving. The only way it can be successful is if all cars are on a the same network. That’s the most simple and effective way to mitigate the risk of a malfunction or complex situation adversely affecting an autonomous car. For example, in

Self driving cars are the jet packs, flying cars, and turbine cars of our generation. Even if they do happen, they are decades away. Anyone who uses self driving cars as a reason to not invest in transportation or building better cities is making a massive mistake.

It’s not ready now, nobody expects roads full of autonomobiles tomorrow, it’ll take 5 to 15 years. And the real problem will be pedestrians. Because they’ll step on road whenever and wherever they want just ‘coz they assume that car will stop every time. Even if it means 15g deceleration.

The guy does a great job of minimizing the damage. Well done sir!

Its a high quality product that sometimes without warning sprays hot metal at your head and neck.
