1) No, you can play multiplayer with a single JoyCon if you set the controls to Horizontal Mode. This is how you can enable 8 players on a single screen in Battle Mode, and it applies to the 2-player co-op in Story Mode. No extra hardware required unless you plan on having an offline Battle Mode party.
