You’re not kidding. The original battery in my six year old Legacy gave up the ghost a few weeks ago, so I pulled it and ran to Auto Zone for a new one. I was standing in my driveway installing the new battery when my neighbor wandered over and said, “It’s probably the alternator.”

You are spot on in that the one off, strange, and custom jobs will be left that machines can not automate away. Workers need to be able to transition into those niches. Whether there are enough of those niches is another story.

The solution is to provide free or highly subsidized vocational training or higher education tuition to displaced workers so they can find better jobs.
