You are really dumb if you think modern engines lack low end torque. The tiny OEM turbos nowadays have excellent low end torque. The extra gears are literally just there for the gains in efficiency. The engine can be at its sweet spot regardless of the road speed.

I would totally pick them. Pissed that VW is continuing its tradition of screwing the US and not bringing the digital dash on the GTI, even though I’m pretty sure you can get it in Canada.
