The Rise of the Federation series (set after the Romulan War, and basically a sequel to Enterprise) are amazing.
Indeed; the Abramsverse was in many ways the best thing that happened to the Prime timeline, because it meant Pocket Books’ shared-universe suddenly had carte blanche. They’ve been producing some of the best fiction Star Trek has ever had.

Being a cheap imitation kinda makes sense for Kylo Ren, though.
It’s more of a 1980s/2000s thing than a national thing; cabovers (like 80s-Prime) tend to be less safe and less fuel-efficient (since they have the aerodynamic profile of, well, a wall).
