Anytime is good; I started kick-boxing when I was 5.  I’m a small dude, and since my parents thought I would get picked on a lot in school, they signed me up.  Never got into a single fight until I was in eighth grade; mostly the other kids saw how confident I was, which made me a poor target for potential bullies.
