I wonder if she’s sort of saying (poorly) that we should remember that ISIS is made up of human beings and not literal monsters? That they also have had moments of love and joy and acts of kindness in their lives (though they are acting like monsters now)?

The problem with this viewpoint and cartoon is that there is more than one type of censorship. The government can stop you from speaking, or it can step aside and let the mob do it.

Ageism is alive, well, and applauded. Self-examination is a good thing for everyone.

I have a copy of the first paragraph of that on my office bulletin board. It helps me shake away the casual sexism I get on a daily basis. I just remember to think “Is this person in between me and what I want to achieve?” and 90% of the time, they’re not and I can ignore and move on.

That little bit about the “neutral proving ground” is really useful advice for anyone who’s dealing with a workplace where there is any sort of favoritism, nepotism, sexism or discrimination.
