She is absurdly smart. Went to Dartmouth. Her podcast was incredible (RIP...) mainly because she is a phenomenal interviewer. I was always amazed at how she managed to make even the blandest pretty white boy seem interesting when he was talking to her.

I was thinking the same thing. How many more facts does she need?!

Hi. I’m a Cuban/Colombian who grew up in Miami. All of my family still lives here. There are many, many Cuban republicans. It’s awful and I fight against it as often as I can.

I was just going to comment how much I loved that photo in particular.

Not that we shouldn’t jail them, necessarily, but the restorative justice movement must include violent offenders and violent crimes or it simply cannot work.

Of the total population of prisoners in the US right now, 8% are non-violent drug users who weren't dealing. 54% are violent non-drug offenders, including rapists and murderers. Any real plan for reducing mass incarceration has to go beyond non-violent drug offenders.

Putting the death penalty on the table as a punishment for rape, in addition to being indefensible because capital punishment is morally repugnant, is counterproductive.

I do so love when Jezebel becomes a parody of itself.

You’re pain is valid. This crime is horrific.

Excellent and informative article.

The following paragraph immediately precedes the paragraph I quoted.

From Bossypants by Tina Fey

Correct. That’s why it’s good that they start paying for shit, and I’m all for requiring that they start paying for shit. But if you were expecting something for free, and then you’re charged for it, it’s human nature to be annoyed at that upending of your expectations, whether or not you were morally justified in not

Are centuries of gross injustice more preferable to you than a generation of minor injustices?

I’m done. Murder is always the murderer’s fault. There are no “but I felt really bad because I couldn’t find a girl to like me” mitigating circumstances.

Yes. While I do normally subscribe to the Kantian “a person is not a means to an end, only an end in themselves”, I don’t believe that that applies to all means and all ends. Sometimes, a small amount of personal sacrifice (in this case a SWM accepting a small injustice) is necessary to serve a greater goal (equality

tl;dr Straight white men objectively face individual small hardships for being straight, white, and male. I think we, as the activist/progressive movement, should be able to acknowledge those hardships’ existence at the same time as we recognize that they must happen to serve the goal of greater justice.

To be fair, 400 individuals and organizations are protesting this proposal, not just celebrities.

Ok. But doesn’t “one strike and you’re out” incentivize rapid escalation? If all abuse has the same punishment, what stops a violent offender from killing their victim after the abuse, to lower their chances of being caught?

I’ll just say it. Men dressing like slobs at red carpet events is rude to the women present. First of all, as a man, I’m embarrassed on behalf of my gender. Second, it’s ridiculous that women are required to dress to the nines and bring their A-Game EVERY SINGLE TIME, or be thrown to the harpies of the gossip press.
