how can you combat such ignorance? seriously. how can someone like her become anti-racist?

I'm happy that a fellow man is trying to grapple with these issues on a deep level, and trying to understand how privilege and systems of power affect your life on a day-to-day level.

It's not a difficult concept to grasp. My point is that everyone is somebody's child. And I don't like the way this website, and others, dehumanizes criminals. Dehumanization is one of the biggest problems with our criminal justice system and one of the many reasons for our overflowing prisons and ongoing human rights…

Compassion is never wasted. And you are consistently using dehumanizing language against Mack's attacker (I refuse to use his stupid legal name). He's a human being who has done something awful and deserves to be punished to the full extent of the law, not an "organism" or a "creature".

The theory of catharsis is Freudian. Like everything else Freud propounded, it was eventually proven to be inaccurate as a psychological theory.

I think that's fairly cynical. The news skews our viewpoint. Violent crime is down by every metric, and has been on a downward trend for more than 20 years. Racial equality is improving, gay rights are improving, trans rights are improving, women's rights are improving, etc.

I've lived my whole life in either Miami or Houston. I'm lucky enough that those cities are democratic areas anyway, so I've never really had to deal with GOP backwardness on a personal level, but obviously state politics are state politics.

My problem with the hate shown towards the south (And I'm a gay latino southerner) is that the south is America as much as New York and California are, so our problems are their problems too.
