I loved that place! I went there in high school with my friends after drama rehearsal!

It's not offensive to ask "Which pronouns do you prefer?". If someone's gender presentation is ambiguous enough that that question is required, they'll most likely be used to the sentiment and fine with the question.

The word "Ukraine" is thought to come from the old word for "borderland". It was "The Ukraine" when referring to the geograpic region during various periods of history when it wasn't its own state, so you would say "the Ukraine" the way we might say "the midwest" in the US. Now that it's its own state, you just say

My rule of thumb has always been "Female pronouns when they're in 'character', male pronouns when they're not." Though some people have different preferences. For instance, RuPaul doesn't care at all and Willam Belli always uses "he"

I suppose a necessary corollary to that is that most people get married in their 20s. It's a different culture, with different pros and cons.

I hear you! My Colombian mother, when she first came to this country, was shocked that kids wanted to move away permanently at 18 and to live with your parents in your 20s was seen as shameful. In South America, you may go away for school, but you live with your parents until you get married.

The thing is, I never hear anything about the "We're not all like that" people actually doing anything about the bigotry.

I've answered this twice now. Read the whole thread please.

Which is why I said "northern or western European in ancestry", in order to be more specific than "White" which is a vaguely defined term in the US that has as much to do with external perception as personal identification and heritage. Read my other comment on this thread.

I have thankfully never had that happen, living all my life in Florida and Texas (we're used to the real variety of hispanic appearances here), but my brother, who lives in Chicago, has that happen all the time.

Absolutely, which is why "Caucasian" is a ridiculous euphemism for "white". "White" in the US used to mean WASP, and now means "could conceivably be WASP, based on appearance". For many (though of course not all) purposes, perceived race is just as important as personally-identified race.

I'm seeing a lot of "you don't get a cookie for being a decent person". You know what? Why not give a cookie for realizing "racism exists and that's bad"? Not a giant, elaborate dinner party, so to speak, but a cookie. It's completely possible for KK and most people enjoying her levels of privilege to swim through

If I saw a picture of her for the first time without any context, I wouldn't assume she was northern or western European in ancestry. She looks like most of the Hispanic and Italian women I grew up with in skin color, hair and eye color, and features.

They were probably playing a lot of board games and didn't want to disturb you with their enthusiastic banter.

I just snorted my coffee

I feel so bad for Ariel Winter. What an awful, fucked-up situation to be in.

Oh that
*waves hand*
minor details, darling.

No, I think she's awesome. She's sane and happy and seems to have her life figured out, she's a mom without shoving down everyone's throats how good of a mom she is, and she took time off in her twenties to get out of the spotlight and ground herself.

Yeah, but it's a big event. It's basically an excuse to get romantic and schmoopy.
