I don't even know that it's about privilege so much as about basic rigour in the testing. If a drug were only effective in vegans, and a) they didn't realize it for years because they only got around to testing it on vegans, and b) they didn't publicize it after the fact to keep sales high, it would be equally shoddy.

If I were 135 lbs, I'd be dangerously underweight. Holy shit. I was about as educated a consumer of this stuff as a lay person could be, back when this was a concern for me, and never heard about this at all.

It's also unreal because this pill has been in wide use for DECADES and they're only just figuring this out. Staggering.

That's the thing with cultural appropriation: it offends those nominally appropriated far less than rich white westerners with too much time on their hands who throw fits to alleviate their own sense of guilt. The underlying impulse - to respect the Other - is a good one, but I have trouble taking it seriously as

Nothing much to add, but good for you for recovering.

The principal at my kids' school insists that all notes home get vetted by her. Until reading this, I thought that was a bit control-freaky. Now it makes sense.

Yes. This. You nailed what was bugging me so much about this, that I couldn't articulate.

And she handled it like a snarky uppity twit. It's not acceptable for a municipal worker to take that tone with a taxpayer/client, ever. I will go to the mat for good teachers, and have. But I will not tolerate bullshit from them, ever.

I swear to God I would buy one from Etsy just for the hilarity of it.

They can be. They're self-regulating, which means when they get it wrong, they can go badly wrong; but they can move fast, adapt quickly, and get it incredibly right, quickly, when they get it right.

Concealer and mascara in a field exercise? Hrm. Not sure you know what we're referring to, if you don't get how glaringly inappropriate and peculiar this would be in reality.

And her judgment and situational awareness. Like if a surgeon showed up for a consult in a micromini, stilettos and halter top. She might be a kickass surgeon, but you can't tell me that wouldn't raise your eyebrows and make you question your choice of surgeon at least a little.

I find your obvious anti-Ferengi bias disturbing. Check your species privilege!

Don't you love how coy they are with that, always making it look as if it's their doctor, and then in tiny print/at the end of the three page article, "who does not treat Kim Kardashian", etc?

I've been using that! Also, it syncs with some other health software I use, so I'm very happy with the free version, all around.

Christ, why do so few social scientists understand basic statistics?

Yup. Ford is Canadian.

That's ascribing a certain level of decency to him. You're being charitable, but I'm inclined to think it's similar: he's a violent asshole, and will ultimately get what he's due for one thing or another, just like Al Capone went down on mail fraud. (Right? Am I confusing him with someone else?) Not because he thinks
