If I were a betting woman I’d say Widlar is the OP. Just a guess.

Good grief, please do shut up.
Ignorantly insulting a severely injured person (when correct info is easily available and the reference unnecessary) ≠ asshole in your book? Mkay.
Why is the name-calling so appalling to you when it’s directed at a commenter who was being snide, but not when it’s directed at someone who was horribly victimized? That’s what I don’t understand.
The OP initiated this thread with name-calling and implying that the victim was entirely at fault. By continually defending them, you are pulling ahead in the asshole race here.
If a person wants to go around publicly insulting someone, it is upon them to actively inform themselves on the details of whatever the basis of the insults is. Insulting people based on rumor is an asshole move*.
The devil is in the details. Thats a metaphor but keep it in mind whenever someone is trying to push a load of bullshit.
Also- interesting fact- during pretrial discovery the plaintiff got an internal report from mcdonalds in house food safety experts. they said that the coffee was too hot but mcdonalds corporate kept…
Well, when people don’t behave decently, it’s pretty unreasonable for them to expect that they’ll be afforded the decency they themselves failed to exercise. Calling the plaintiff in the McDonald’s suit “some dumb lady” was hardly the height of courtesy.
The OP was an asshole for making the comment they made about the Hot Coffee victim without bothering to find out the actual details of the case. As you say; don’t want to be called an asshole? Don’t be an asshole.
The OP was the asshole who called the victim of the Hot Coffee case “some dumb lady” and implied that she was 100% at fault for her extensive injuries, also implying that her very real and severe injuries did not warrant the settlement she got. They deserve the responses they are getting.
It’s a pretty low bar to clear; I try to meet people where they’re coming from, so they just have to not be assholes in the first place. It’s kind of a “reap what you sow” situation, y’know?
I can, that’s true.
I know, it’s despicable how they presented the case and paved the way for corporations to use it as an example of “frivolous lawsuits”. I’m really glad the documentary Hot Coffee is out there, it’s doing a very good job at correcting the incorrect narrative.
I’m not the one who brought up the coffee, I’m not the one who spoke in ignorance, and I’m not the one who condescendingly shit all over a victim here. That’s where your precious derailing happened. In the very first post of the thread, making it less “a conversation,” per se, than “an ignorant person being rude.”
The widespread belief that the Hot Coffee woman won an outrageous amount for a frivolous case in which she (as the ignorant believe) was 100% at fault actually has caused a lot of problems. Spreading falsities can actually be harmful. But I’m sure the victim in that case appreciates your being so dismissive of her…
“The fucking point is I’d rather suffer a SUPER EXTREME BEYOND BELIEF YOU SHOULD GOOGLE IT coffee burn than have that shitstain’s dick forced into my mouth.”
I agree that the Hot Coffee case has nothing to do with this one - so why bring it up? But since you did - when you demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of something that you reference specifically to make your point, people will point out your obvious lack of understanding of that thing.
Don’t repeat corporate propaganda without Googling first. Liebeck originally asked for $20k to cover medical expenses (her 3rd degree burns required skin grafts) and loss of income. When McDonalds refused to settle they went to trial. The jury was so horrified by the willful and gross negligence that they awarded her…
If you’re going to reference a specific case, you might want to actually read up on and understand that case first.
She was awarded for her medical bills, that coffee was well into dangerous temperatures and caused third degree burns on 6% (eta actually it may have been 16%) of her body. It almost killed her. She was in the hospital for 8 days and needed skin grafts. She originally asked for her medical bills but they refused.
