I disagree that the way many people talk about games, the lenses they look at them through, is from the place of an art critic. To me, being an art critic requires a level of respect and understanding for art. Many people who claim to be supporters of these social issues, have none.

I read that earlier today and had a discussion with the author about it as well. And I'll tell you the same thing I told him. Just because a vocal minority was absolutely horrible during all this, does not make all gamers awful human beings.

Will you make a report/article about the #gamergate tag which has been frienldy and inclusive and had it's supporters doxxed and harassed with death threats and insults? Is a guy working at Polygon threatening swatting people not harassment, not news-worthy?

Now playing

I was somebody who applauded Stephen's move on twitter but seeing this article flung about I can't help but view it all as rather dishonest. You seem intent on painting this narrative of some misogynistic horde of gamers going to town on these poor innocent maidens and spreading hate all across the Internet. Not true.

"There is something wrong with gaming journalism"

But the big issue right now is not hate. It's journalistic and developer integrity.

I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I've made a comment about the gaming press. I haven't made a comment about people making videos in response to Anita Sarkeesian.

Just a quick note: I'm actually British. I used the NYT and WSJ as examples as I expect the people reading this will mainly be American, and those who aren't will understand the abbreviations anyway.

I'm so, so, so confused as to the seeming ignorance of the gaming media here. Maybe it's because my main interest is politics that I have a certain detached view of this.

I see this differently: No one can deny that "gamers" have become an incredibly sour and jaded consumer group, but rather than an illness, I see this development as a symptom—a symptom of an industry that has increasingly demonstrated zero respect for its consumers. On top of that, games media has abdicated their

And that is how you ignite a wildfire. This whole spectacle is about controlled censorship. But it's your blog post so have at it good sir.

I think it's important to let people speak their mind, man. Taking away people's words doesn't make anyone feel better.

This pleases me. I wasted ten bucks on Fall out: New Vegas because it won't run on my PC. I've changed graphics cards since I bought it three Christmases ago, I've reformatted my PC, and Valve kept pointing me to Bethesda, and I just wanted a refund. They didn't want me to have one.

I've already made that ten dollars

See, this bugs me quite a bit. Back when she released her first video, I felt there were some problems with it, so, as best I could, I explained why I felt that way. People chose to take it as "concern trolling," and much, much worse. Her defenders, at the time, remind me of the same people who attack and deride her.

It's a shame video games caused all this. We really must be more careful.

Those Twitter responses are pretty telling, huh?

"Stop complaining about misogyny in video games! It's not a problem! By way of proof, here, have a whole bunch of misogynistic comments!"

And even hate-bombing people like Tim Schafer for daring to express his approval of her work? That's pretty pathetic.

"In real life, women come under assault from all sorts of men."

You know, it's true that Anita does selectively pick and choose segments from games which show instances of sexism. To an extent, this is necessary, since she can't show you the entirety of every game she mentions, but you could argue that there is some cherrypicking involved.

A quick google search found this handsome devil.

The fallacy of his argument is that it presupposes a false dichotomy. Either games cannot express meaningful things, or they must express meaningful things which are divisive. That is not so, not by a long shot. Look at a game like The Walking Dead. There's no politics in that game. There is no agenda that the
