Here's the thing, I thought that it was rather odd that in the pictures when he is choking her she is still holding his hand and not reflexively trying to move his hands from her throat, not grasping the table, and not looking frantic or really scared. I read her body language as not being afraid for her safety.
I suspect that she has been trying to fit in and she is bringing up the things that make her just like anyone else as opposed to standing out and being an outcast. That doesn't mean that she doesn't have things that are intellectually stimulating that she is just not talking about.
