You should definitely check out the newer book on ancient tattooing, but there are also some really good historical chapters too (e.g., by Gemma Angel). The book is called, “Ancient Ink: The Archaeology of Tattooing” edited by Lars Krutak and Aaron Deter-Wolf (Aaron was a co-author on this article).
