I was a little too young for “The Cars” and “Candy-O”, but “Heartbeat City” landed like a goddamn bomb in the middle of my early adolescence. “You Might Think” was completely inescapable during the summer of 1984, and a more perfect slice of deliberately crafted pop music is hard to imagine.

Yesterday I took a day trip with my Mom. On the drive there we listened to what she said was one of her favorite albums growing up. I had never listened to it, although I knew some of the singles. It was, of course, The Cars self-titled debut album. That album was nearly flawless fun. It is somehow both front-loaded
