How exactly does Google know that some drivers are first responders? People think Google has some god-like powers and get information that does not exist in some database or that changes with weather and time.
Yes, for sure Google Maps needs to stop suggesting detours.
But they do know I-80 is closed and Caltrans is telling them to go back. They made a decision to go through a backroad because they are obviously smarter than Caltrans and a winter storm.
If Caltrans closes the biggest and safest highway over the mountains, what makes anyone think a country backroad is a great idea to go around the closure?

They are not fire or forest roads. They are asphalt paved narrow country backroads. Used by locals. Not for heavy traffic. And not as well maintained. Dangerous even in good weather. And they are obviously lower priority for maintenance compare to interstate highway that carries all traffic and commerce between…
