If the trees decay the carbon mostly ends up back in the atmosphere, but a cut down tree can store carbon for thousands of years quite effectively in a dry environment. 

Plant a couple hundred acre forest, let it grow for 50 years, cut it down and use the trees to build a wooden warehouse to store the rest of the trees in a dry sheltered place. Repeat over and over again.
