Adblock plus, at least in Firefox (chrome has a significantly more limited API) has the ability to prevent the requests to the ad servers from being sent. It does this by interrupting the gecko engine whenever an ad is going to be loaded and simply removes the ad code from the rendering loop. Good stuff.

It all depends on the system, many advertisers don't pay you until they measure the impressions or in the more common case, clicks. Therefore Gizmodo doesn't get paid in either of those situations from any of my reading.
