In my experience pretty much every addict had something else going on. Nobody was "just" an addict.

That is called grazing and is considered theft. You should purchase the apples first and then let the kids consume them. Apples are not a standardized size, as if that mattered, and "willingness" to purchase them after the fact by rough guesstimation does not compensate the store for the actual product.
