Superman, as a symbol, is a projection of our idealized self. Thus, when I imagine an old superman, I imagine an elder statesman and teacher of the next generation who can still kick ass when he has to, instead of a bloated sorrowful wreck.

In the original Gundam series, there was actually a lot of very interesting technical progression during the 1-year war as both sides learned more about fighting under these conditions. My favorite examples are the Solar System and the RGM-79 GM.
