It’s the most perfectly 6/10 or 3/5 movie ever. Great performance in the lead, great cinematography, great score, pedestrian direction, nothing real special from the rest of the cast, mediocre script. It's fine, I certainly don't regret seeing it, but 11 Oscar nominations is just absurd.

You aren't wrong, but he was also significantly more successful than  RichRod and Hoke. And I think the era was rather different. Coaches get fired a lot quicker and more often these days, they have shorter leashes in general.
