I have an ‘87 ford. It did have that goofy electronic carb. It also had literally 12 vacuum ports. It worked great until it didn’t. Spent a couple days trying to run down the issue, then took it to a shop. They quoted me a couple hundred bucks. I stuck a different carb on it and never looked back.

You can still buy ethanol free gas in my area. I need it for my work truck. It has a carb and I lose mileage and power. If its not marked on the pump, its pretty easy to spot when I start driving up a hill. Then the mileage confirms it.

My work truck has a carb. I buy whatever does not have an ethanol sticker on it. Sometimes its 87, usually its 91, but I have had to pay for 93 because it all that was available. My truck just loses too much. Yea, I could buy a newer truck, but this is paid off, no rust, pulls my trailer nicely, and insurance is cheap.

Also, diesel is more of a burn than an explosion. You can keep dumping fuel into the cylinder during the power stroke and make more power. you are not limited to what you can effectively mix with air during the intake stroke.
