I had never heard this until I watched Beauty Shop with Queen Latifah...and I LOVED it.

"Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,They think I'm telling lies.
I say,It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me."
This is the first time in a very long time that a "celebrity" death has brought me to actual tears. I saw her speak at a commencement ceremony at Austin College when I was in high school, and her words have stuck with me throughout the years, especially during darker times.
After all the horror of the past few days, and weeks, and months, and probably years, I thought it needed to be said by someone more eloquent than I.
Rest in Peace, she lived an incredible and long life. She inspired me to write poetry and I will be forever indebted to her for that.
"A Brave and Startling Truth"
If you write, direct, and perform multi-million dollar Hollywood movies, you shouldn't get offended every time your name or your movie gets mentioned in the vicinity of some larger discussion of social ills. Here's what she actually wrote:
Get out of here with your common sense and critical thinking. No place for that here!
I think you hit the nail on the head, here. While the critic who wrote the article may have had some debatable points, Rogan and Apatow refused to debate them AT ALL. They chose to be pissy and defensive instead of contributing to a national conversation about gender roles in the media. And that makes me regard them…
Did you see the thinkprogress article: http://thinkprogress.org/culture/2014/0…? It makes some good points. I especially like the comparison of Christian Bale's response to the Aurora shooting (i.e., Christian was respectful and not knee-jerk-whiny. Rogen got out-classed by ol' Rant-on-the-Terminator-Set Bale.).
Rogen and Apatow have made themselves look like overgrown whiny teenagers with their reaction to the op ed.
Agreed. The reporter wasn't trying to hold them personally responsible, either, and I suspect chose those films as examples because they were recent and/or big box office hits. The less conventionally attractive guy "getting" the hot chick at the end is hardly a new thing or unique to Seth Rogan movies. He usually…
I'm annoyed Rogan and Apatow are acting as if she had written an article that said "The Neighbors" caused the shooting. She didn't, at all. She asked rhetorically in the middle of the article how many men had unrealistic expectations of manhood as a result of similar movies, which seems like a really good question.
I'm not saying that I personally hold Seth Rogan or Judd Apatow responsible for that kid shooting up a bunch of bystanders in Santa Barbara or anything, but am I the only one who finds the whole reaction on their behalf kind of irritating? I think there were some (some!) valid claims about men feeling entitled to…
Yikes. I'll try this one. In short, almost every time I've had this discussion with someone, who starts by criticizing Islam (or Hinduism, or Indian culture), it actually devolves into the other person becoming a virulent racist. Seriously. I'm not saying you are, or everyone who wants to criticize Islam is, but…
It's not "misinterpreting", but rather, the "problems" that occur when your religion IS your law. You can't have true freedom of religion if you hold one religion above all else that you accept it as your primary law, i.e. shariah law.
The problem here is one of Apostasy, which under many interpretations of Shariah law, is indeed punishable by death, because it's seen as betrayal of that religion.
Or, because servers are socially contagious, so she mustn't look directly at them.
I'm willing to bet she didn't notice or give a crap about the baby.
To hear them tell it, they are the most bullied people in the world. Gay kids who get harassed and physically assaulted every day need to toughen up and grow a pair; religious conservatives are oppressed victims living under the constant fear that they might someday accidentally sell a cake to a gay couple.
