I had a couple of those old tanks with the five point star handles. I don’t think I paid an extra when I exchanged them for the newer three cornered handle with the overfill protection device. I don’t think the person where I exchanged them even noticed.

There’s a big hardware store by me that has self serve propane exchange so you could replace a really old tank if you want and nobody would know. If you really want to dispose of a propane tank, many municipalities have certain days where you can drop off hazardous materials like propane tanks and flammable materials.
