Yeah, a few years back I had to put a healthy deposit down to get an Audi in a color other than Silver/White/Black/Grey. Oddly, last year my wife and I ordered and we just received a limited edition BMW... with a manual.

Well, the dealers don’t believe in them. So they don’t order the “thinking person’s car.” They order what will sell, with the largest amount of “MEDs” on it (Margin Enhancement Devices).

We went with the 3.5L Ecoboost. It tows a 24ft enclosed trailer (probably 10,000lbs) just fine. Mileage is entirely wind-dependent, anywhere from 8mpg to 11mpg with the trailer.

Yeah, wanted the 10-speed and aluminum body, which were new in 2017, so we didn’t get the luxury of that initial depreciation. Plus, we were VERY picky about our spec since we only wanted it for towing. I think we’re still around 15,000 miles on it after 3 1/2 years.

I’m an “only buy used” person. My wife and I have a small collection of Craiglist-caliber cars that we’ve fixed up into “slightly better than Craigslist caliber” cars. Our 2 daily drivers have a combined 340,000 miles.  I tell you this for context.

I’m in Chicago, and we salt pretty liberally here, too.

Speaking from experience, it’s not THAT easy on some cars. On the 987.1 Caymans/Boxsters it isn’t a “once you’re in there” solution. It’s a split the engine open solution. Some cars can easily be swapped/upgraded, but not all.

Be careful trying to register ANY salvage car (that 128i) in Illinois.  Illinois doesn’t take kindly to titles marked “salvage.”  Ask me how I know.

Considering how overly religious Grand Rapids is, the number of good breweries, cideries and distilleries is staggering.  For a small(er) town, the number per capita is pretty damn good.
