Yeah this flashy, twirly combat never made any sense at all to me given the physical characteristic of lightsabers.
I think a criminally underused and appreciated style was the European rapier style used by Christopher Lee in Episode 2. Sure, it still had it's twirly bits that was the norm of lightsaber combat in the prequel trilogy, but brought back a lot of the utilitarian and visceral feel of the original trilogy.
