@wtfox?!: That's exactly it. Even the privileged and well-educated have a hard time questioning doctors the way they should, and quacks often deliberately choose patients who are neither because they know those people are more likely to consent and less likely to sue if something goes wrong.
@I_can_still_pitch: Hell yeah. To be fair to the parents, people will often consent to things they never should consent to—for themselves or their children—if the doctor is forceful or persuasive enough. People put entirely too much trust in the medical establishment, and sick quacks love to take advantage of that.

@Antrack: When Pret opened in NYC, they learned quickly that Americans—-and calorie-conscious New Yorkers in particular—-don't have the same deep, abiding love of mayo, so they had to rejigger all their recipes.
The British have a mayo fetish. SRSLY. There is no sandwich in the United Kingdom that is not lovingly slathered with the stuff, as though if it's not oozing mayo, it's not fit to eat.
I really applaud her courage in telling her story.

If I remember Physics 101 correctly, any shoe with a thick foam or rubber sole—-Crocs, sneakers, Docs—-will have this effect, since those substances are very poor electrical conductors.
