There were many barriers to BM/WF relationships in the pre-Civil Rights era. Some of those barriers were enforced by the law. Others by terrorism and violence. Others by culture.

In summary:

Prevalence of Black men in sports and entertainment creates more familiarity with Black men as idealized masculine figures. Media representation is very important.

Two problems with that:
