While 8 seconds 0-60 is not as fast as 6.8, 8 seconds is hardly slow. I mean, how fast do you really need to get to 60? I'd argue that what really matters is the clutch/shifting experience, since you'll be doing that every time you drive, while you probably won't be trying to hit 60 away from every stoplight.
Diesel is now more expensive because of the new requirement for ultra low sulfur content, AND the road tax is higher (I presume because the expectation is diesel is used by heavier vehicles)

My guess on the mesh covers would be that they guard the engine from taking in other bits of engine or particulates that may be flying around under the hood.
